It contains very significant differences and when your users seek help on forums by specifying MySQL, they sometimes get incorrect advice.
MariaDB was forked, will never merge back, and had its own development occurring by many staff over many years.
Calling a product you bundle by an incorrect name is irreverent, to both MySQL and MariaDB.
I realise that you are a very small team (individual), but its been quite a while (2016-02-24 based of the FAQ "Since XAMPP 5.5.30 and 5.6.14, XAMPP ships MariaDB instead of MySQL"), and I think its fair to have MariaDB represented correctly (instead of "MySQL") in interface and documentation.
I'd really appreciate the correction, and I'll try to support our common userbase as best I can.
