Setting up a new computer

List of things you might want to install/setup on a new laptop/computer to make your life easier

  • sort out access to eduroam
  • Xcode (mac only)
  • magnet (mac only - lets you but windows in different areas of screen)
  • Chrome (or Firefox if you prefer)
  • Git and link to github account using ssh key -> version control your code
  • Miniconda -> manage all your bioinformatic/datascience software these include
    • ipython
    • jupyter lab
    • scikit learn
    • pandas
    • numpy
    • r-base
    • r-tidyverse
    • r-essentials
    • rstudio
  • atom -> text editior - there are various add-ons you might also want
    • pep8
    • ftp-remote-edit
    • teletext
    • platformio-ide-terminal
  • OneNote -> microsoft software for virtual notebooks great for lab book alternative or general notetaking
  • tmux - help mutiplex terminal panes and keep sessions running when you log off (might need to install via brew if you are using a mac)
  • Filezilla -> for ftp transfer of files between systems (an alternative is cyberduck)
  • Microsoft remote desktop or chrome remote desktop if you use these to log onto other machines
  • Slack - messaging app to keep in tough with various groups
  • Zoom - video conferencing
  • Skype - video calling
  • You might also want to use Rswitch
  • Dropbox
  • Readcube/Papers for reference management
  • VSCode
    • Extensions: Live Server: Allows you to right click on html file in browser and open file from server in local browser
