Alpha/Beta releases #503
-
Hi, I had hard time trying to get a current release from the source code (don't know why exactly tho), so I thought that maybe you could put out "unstable releases" in the addon web stores, where by default you have a stable selected, but you can select an unstable one. That would help a lot since I think I'd prefer some unstable alpha rn rather than barely working pre 6.1.0 release which doesn't have most of the useful features. Also I feel like forum/facebook/discussions there are all dead, why don't you (maybe) have a discord? Just a thought. |

Hey, I am not in charge of the stores, but it doesn't work like that. Every time you have to wrap everything up and upload it on every store, then wait for the review process (which can take days), now for every small change, you would need to repeat it. How would we even keep the versioning? Also, I don't think stores are allowing to select versions, so it would need to be managed by the addon, you would need to create a whole new system for this. No, for what it is, the amount of work for this is not worth it, if I added a single letter to the source code, we would need to update it. And also to be honest, we don't add to and update GCA that often, but I do understand you want fixes as soon as possible. When it comes to discord, you already mentioned the reason, it wouldn't be more active than other platforms are. For unstable releases, I recommend using the .zip method: I used to dream about GCA auto-updating, but it's not something easy to implement (unsure if it's even possible, because you would be bypassing the stores), basically the files would be stored online (perhaps the GCA website) in a folder and update itself from there. Thanos could tell us more about the posibilities, but even his time is limited, keep that in mind. |

@pSzlufik to start with, right now, no one is actively working on this project and @FrutyX and I are just keeping it under life support. Also, something else that has to be taken into consideration, this is a 14-year-old project meaning that I, @GreatApo and other collaborators have been working and maintaining this for 14 years. We have been releasing versions for 14 years on stores from multiple browsers so that users can get automatic updates from the stores. So... personally I can not support a 2nd version channel just because someone wants fixes faster. The project is open source, anyone can clone the repository locally, enable the developer mode for extensions and load it as an unpacked extension. This will take 2 hours even if they have no idea what you are doing. |
