How do we rationalize getting ETC into upstream without committing to support it?
Or can you say a little more what the idea here is?

Re-titled.

This is tracking the task of cleaning upstreaming the ETC support.

We can defer this task until after we have committed to support it in production. I would agree there is little merit in premature upstreaming.
