Consider server template/launch configuration correct architecture

Today, I retrieve the one any only pre-defined basic server template in RightScale and use that for launch configuration. On server array (AutoScalingGroup) creation I just tell it to use the choosen Image and therefore the server template isn't really used (except to default the instance size). We need to come to an architectural decision on server templates and how they relate to auto scaling groups / server arrays.
