We can't have the version file at the root of the repo because when the code is installed only the subdirectories euclidlike and euclidlike_imsim are copied which there is an error when you try to import either because the file VERSION is not found.

We need to think about a better solution but at the moment I think we will have to update both _version.py files by hand.
