Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.

Errors are not surfaced visibly, as encountered when #1513 was discovered.

Describe the solution you'd like

Failure to save data should be shown modally, not buried behind an obscure button.

A clear and concise description of any alternative solutions or features you've considered.

Additional context

Sometimes a tough judgement call about which exceptions are important enough to surface modally.
