Since Ryot already uses TMDB, there are a lot of variables that are available, but not being used. Here's a full list that should be available via the API:

https://developer.themoviedb.org/reference/movie-details

One of the values is popularity. It's a really advance metric that uses tons of data from user interactions and puts it into a number. The only issue I can see with it, is that it changes very quickly. Week to week it can be very different. It would be great to see popularity implemented as a sort option.

I don't think I want to implement this. Instead, I will implement a collection called trending that will do exactly what you need. See #1259.
