Why are functions sometimes quoted?

I noticed with delight that you used %s% instead of "%s%" in your code — the latter gives me the willies. But it’s actually quite common to find quoted operators or even quoted normal function names in code. Maybe this would also fit in the FAQ? This is a nice WTF:

"x" = 2
