3 dozen cookies (4-5 doz. according to recipe)

2/3 cup (150g) shortening (butter or margarine)

1/2 cup (100g) granulated sugar

1/2 cup (100g) brown sugar

1 egg
-
1 tsp. vanilla
-
1 1/2 cups (220g) all-purpose flour

OR 1 3/4 cups (250g) for softer, rounded cookie

1/2 tsp. baking soda (Natron)

1/2 tsp. salt
-
1/2 cup nuts (can be omitted)

1 6 oz. pkg/1 cup (170g) chocolate chips

2 100g packages will also work

Heat oven to 375°F (190°C).

Mix shortening, sugars, egg and vanilla thoroughly. Stir dry ingredients together and blend in. Mix in chocolate chips and nuts, if using.

Drop rounded teaspoonfuls of dough about 2" (~5 cm) apart on ungreased baking sheet. Bake 8 to 10 minutes, or until delicately browned (start checking at 7 minutes). Cool slightly before removing from baking sheet.
