Source for Opiod shipment data:

A core component of this project will be a recently released dataset of all prescription opioid drug shipments in the United States from 2006 to 2019. This was only recently released (in 2020) by the Washington Post, which obtained the data through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the US Drug Enforcement Agency.

Source for drug overdose death data:

The best national source of data on drug overdoses is the US Vital Statistics records, which include data on every death in the United States. Because their interface is a pain (e.g. you can only pull 75,000 records at a time, and picking the right variables to download is really annoying), I’ve pre-downloaded their summary of mortality for drug and non-drug-related causes for every US county from 2003-2015 for your use. You can download that data here.
