The migration guide 5.6->6 lists the getShape() method as removed for the layer object:

Class methods that have been removed
...
layerObj: getFilter, getShape

I guess this is not correct since a few lines down this method is mentioned as the new refactored method that replaces the existing getFeature

This is confusing. A developer should clarify and make sure that the MIGRATION guide is consistent. Adding Steve and Daniel.
