To distill my thoughts in an RFE - I see three main user motives. 1 - "I just wanna get back to mekhq/move on" - this group wants to just click a button and be done. 2 - "I like the idea but I don't want to be constantly interacting with an extra button click" - this group wants the feature to some extent but will probably be fine with 'set and forget'. 3 -"I want absolute and explicit control of everything as well as full awareness" - this group wants to have a very detailed level of control and a reinforced level of awareness to ensure things are happening exactly as they desire.
I think there is a solution to have it save that can satisfy all three major groups (maybe multiple solutions, but this is the one that seems most coherent to me). First time a battle is resolved and the MUL file prompt is provided to the user for that install, have an additional prompt for if they would like to produce a gif replay, include a 'do not prompt again' checkmark, include a selectable file path that is saved/preserved and editable in MM and a compact indicator of where that is stored, and note that the path must be configured before they can click yes.
This way you have a one-off additional pop up, the pop up allows suppressing the behavior if it is undesired, the path is adjustable in an accessible area, and the path/action can be configured to prompt or not prompt each time with the same do not prompt again checkmark used for the 1st group, handling both group 2 and group 3's behavior.
