Hi @NASA-Openscapes/mentors-2021,

Thanks for a great session today.

We’re excited about how much things are coming together with all your ideas and work around the common modules. We’re now in a tutorials push for June 30 to create the common modules. Big picture, we are thinking of this as a volume of Jupyterbooks:

  • Volume 0: Carpentries (for NASA Earth data)
  • Volume 1: Common modules to access NASA data on Cloud
  • Volumes 2+: DAAC-specific tutorials

We’re currently focused on Volume 1, and Erin & Aaron have created an openscapes_jupyterbook_test to help us get started. (GH repo, Issues). We’ve also created a Google Doc Outline so we can plan more easily. Please contribute wherever you feel most comfortable. We’re thinking PODAAC & NSIDC might have good additions to the outline and structure and can start populating chapters after their presentations today but everyone is welcome and encouraged to contribute!

We also talked about the Science Champions Cohort announced today (web, twitter). Erin forwarded the email sent to DAAC Managers: we’re looking for researchers interested in learning about open science and migrating to the cloud. They will participate as teams and we’ll work with them through a cohort like ours, and have access to 2i2c to experiment and run your tutorials. You’ll all participate too to get to know them and their needs and practice teaching with a friendly audience. There will be opportunities for you to work with teams specific to your DAAC as well as get a sense of common needs across DAACs. We’re still figuring out details but we’re really excited about it! It’ll be our 6th cohort in the Champions Program, and our first with Mentors joining and with NASA. Dates will be alternating Thursdays, 10-11:30am PT.

June 10 is our last Mentor Cohort Call and you’ll each have 5 minutes to present your Pathways document (3 min present + 2 min questions) to communicate where you are and what you’ve identified as your next steps to contribute to common tutorials (can include review and support). The purpose is so we as a cohort understand where everyone is and also so we can all communicate this more broadly with DAAC managers and post online. We’ve got 2 documents for you to complete to assist:

If anyone wants to experiment with 2i2c we are open to that too – we’d love to share a few examples on our June 10 session.

We’ll be in touch more on Slack and GitHub, and are happy to set up work sessions if folks are interested, please let us know!

Thanks all, and looking forward to it,

Julie and Erin
