There are (at least) four different types of collections:

immutable collections such as those describing a particular set on tape
mutable collections describing those on disk on a particular date at a particular path
(as above) with some sort of glob, and
those organised by pointing at files/variables held in other collections.

It would be desirable to be able to update the second and third of these with a simple "sync" command, and keep a backup of the collection as it was.
