Sometimes I think of something, notice something, or want to reference something in another email, but I'm already in the middle of reading one (a newsletter say, so not short, and I don't want to lose my scroll position).
We can already search for other mail while reading (changing the list but not the reader pane) - it'd be nice to be able to right-click or something on any in the list view, and open it to read in a modal window. Then, on close, the original email open for reading would still be there and in exactly the same place.
(It might also be good to maintain scroll position per email anyway - though I don't think that's always what you want - but even with that I think this would be a nice feature, I think it would feel like a lesser context switch if the first email was still there in the background.)
