...right now, if you don't have permissions to see the non-public datafield, the server returns a nice "internal Server Error" message instead of something useful like "You don't have permissions...log in please".

Unfortunately, this also brought to mind the potential need to be able to share a collection of datarecords without necessarily identifying the criteria behind them. Right now the only way to share a collection of datarecords is by giving the other user all the search criteria, but that won't work for them if the criteria includes a datafield they dont' have permissions to view...
