It seems to be related to the bug report:
matplotlib/matplotlib#10476
This report has been fixed before matplotlib 2.2 release, however, we get a similar error message.
@mzwiessele, do you think we can have a work around?

I think we just have to rerun the tests locally and re-commit the ground truth results.
