Is it possible to deploy to Oxygen and use environment of different account?

I'm working with a client that uses Hydrogen/Oxygen and while developing locally I've been able to connect to my own private store account with test data.

Is it possible to deploy to Oxygen but use another account as the environment so the client is able to view the site with test data?

I recently tried to configure the environment variables but had no luck, so just wanted to ask if anyone's had luck with this.

You want to deploy to your shopify account with which data? His data?

Your demo store when deployed will have the demo data.

On your machine you can use whatever data you want from any store.

Yes. I want to deploy to a Shopify account (that has the Hydrogen app installed) but use the data from another account.

Reason is so I can create a preview deployment that I can send to a client that does not use their current live data.

But it seems like it won't work anyway (see my other comment if you're interested).

You could make the deploy while overriding the environment variables with --env-file: https://shopify.dev/docs/api/shopify-cli/hydrogen/hydrogen-deploy#flags-propertydetail-envfilevalue

Is that the same as using the custom variables via Shopify Admin > Sales channels > Hydrogen > Storefront Settings > Environments and Variables?

Regardless, after looking a bit more into it, I don't think this is going to work. It looks like I need a PRIVATE_STOREFRONT_API_TOKEN from the account that I want to retrieve the data, however that account is just a free account and therefore can't install Hydrogen which is where I'd get the API token. Is that right?

You should be able to install the Headless channel and generate tokens from that instead.
