Another option, though extensive one, is to implement chats in the system. It puts an additional load on the server, but ensures data privacy (this becomes useful when users do not want to set their phone number in the app.
Chat is an option but depends on a notification system which is not yet in place. As the primary goal of the app in this case is to facilitate communication between diners we should probably primarily go for the channels that the users are most familiar with. So I have the following suggestion for in a new PR:
Add telephone field (with a helpful privacy notice as help_text)
Add option for user to make e-mail address public
Find a way of displaying it in the dining entries page, I'm thinking of using a javascript expand behind a button
I don't think that there will be a lot of users with privacy concerns but if that's the case then that's fine.
Feature request from someone else: allow telephone numbers in the system so that people can be stalked about dinner and payment.
If we make it optional and note down that everyone can see it if you fill it in it should be reasonably fine for privacy reasons I think.
