Taking inspiration from NoiseChisel and related programs, we could add galmask's each step's output as a different extension in a single FITS file and return that instead. It would make visualization much easier and faster and would facilitate efficient debugging.

What do we mean by "each step" is something to decide upon but would not take much thought.
