Application performance

On my 2018 Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite which is by no means a low end phone lacking processing power the app takes 5 seconds before showing any content at all.

Any ideas why that might be the case?

Hello there, by content you mean for example the toolbar or the actual content of the blogs? Because the blogs are loaded/scraped from the website so network latency is to be expected

I see a completely white window for 5 seconds, then the toolbar appears and less than 1s later the content appears.

I don't think I am doing anything crazy, or in fact anything at all at start up. Just making the request to load the content in the background. Performance in Fabulous hasn't been fine-tuned and still is work in progress, tracked by this issue

against those 5 seconds #11 is a good thing. So it does not appear to be loading much longer. You need to implement it on each platform because XF does not support splashscreen cross-platform
