Hi.
If you find something interesting in my fork, I'll be pleased.
https://github.com/eleksir/fbpanel/commits/mainline
I have no particular interest in this project and have no plans to
develop it or borrow any new patches. There is too much technical debt
there beginning from its gtk2 basis to its relatively high memory usage
and weird config file format. But all-in-all fbpanel is still the most
neat panel around. And it does not depends on any DE, so it's great too.
I'm afraid that @aanatoly is away for a quite amount of time. If you
want to lead this project, best you can do is to create your own
organisation on github, launch site with fancy name like fbpanel.org or
fbpanel.net or something and make it great again.

I would like to work on the panel. If you don't mind someone else
working on it, perhaps if you can add me as a contributor with write
access or if I can adopt the project from you if you are no longer
interested?
Anyway, let me know if you see this.

Hello There are several forks, where they have updated and added several things, I recommend you take a look at them, talk to users and create an organization, where we can collaborate. I'm willing to collaborate with the page if things happen 👋 |
@eleksir Hi. Thank you! I would definitely check out your fork. I already went through the forks, found those that have contributions to them and starred them so I can find them later. If I end up doing it with other people, I am not sure if everyone will agree with my vision, but I think you would actually like what I want from fbpanel in the future. I also like it as it's not tied to a desktop environment. That is what I am looking for - a traditional desktop panel (C and GTK, with clickable icons and menus that can extend outside of the panel border, etc) that is completely standalone. To be upfront - I am currently learning C, but my plans for fbpanel are to update its dependencies to modern version (like using gtk3 or even gtk4), make it work a bit more like expected (being able to bring up its configuration by right clicking on the panel and selecting it from a menu, also being able to just edit the config file that would be in plain text, etc).
@diazvictor Thank you so much for telling me this and for the interest. That was actually my plan. I did go through the forks and starred those that have contributions to them, so I can easily find them later exactly with the intention in mind to make a GitHub Organization about a panel and add the people to it, see if they are interested in working on a panel together, using fbpanel as the base. Before I create the organization though, would you mind either emailing me on the email in my GitHub profile or stop by #techtavern in Libera Chat if you use IRC or let me know if you have a Discord? I'd like to discuss a couple of ideas with you. |
I just discovered fbpanel, and I'm optimistic we can improve it. |
@eleksir Thank you! I'd look into your contributions. I'll ping you about sending them as a PR to https://github.com/fbpanel/fbpanel at one point if that's ok. @mk-pmb Looking at it (the license, as well as the issue you mentioned and the mentioned Gentoo discussion about it) it's a plain MIT license, however there is just a conjunction and a word missing from the text. I fixed that, as well as removed the two ebuilds from the repo at https://github.com/fbpanel/fbpanel Moved stuff around a bit to make them easier to find (changed COPYING to LICENSE, CREDITS to CONTRIBUTORS) and basically created and org and duplicated the repo there (https://github.com/fbpanel/fbpanel) however it seems it's a shitshow. Like even with gtk2 currently installed, it still can't build. The build system is a mess so it would have to be recreated and ported to gtk3 before anything else, so it can at least run on present day systems for starters. |
