Currently it says:

This is a work-in-progress, far from complete, and was written to target an old version of Altair. Please don't use this package.

but we wonder if there is an alternative

Thank you @jakevdp for the clarification.
I am new to altair, please correct me if I am wrong -- the only way to use altair is only with Java Script powered frontends (like all the jupyter notebooks) and there is no easy way to use it e.g. in a regular python or ipython shell/script?
Feel free to close this issue altogether if you feel that nothing to be added to README for stranded new Altair users who googled it up ;)

thanks, somehow missed, got it -- no way to render them without a browser, unfortunate.

You can also render vega-lite charts from the command line using npm, if you wish to avoid the browser: https://vega.github.io/vega-lite/usage/compile.html#cli
