hmmm... i know that RfCat works on some versions of Windows. i have no idea if it has ever worked on the Surface. if it does, i'm happy, but sadly i have no way of knowing; i don't have a Surface. please accept my apologies, but different OSes do USB quite differently. if you can figure out how to get support for LIBUSB on the Surface, that's what RfCat requires, and it may be within grasp.

does anyone else in the community know of RfCat working on the Surface? @dominicgs @meeas @AdamLaurie @gyaresu @zombieCraig @greatscottgadgets ?

this is not a religious comment, but simply one of pragmatism: RfCat was made to run on Linux, it's what i know and where i spend the majority of my time. usage on other OSes have been at best effort, and have come with significant investment by members of the community - my many thanks to them.

is there anything else i can help you with?

sincerely,
@

np, i happened to have a little time to give today, and i'm happy to help if i can.
have you read the README yet?

you want to install the RfCat software (requires Python2 right now) and the "driver config" (on Linux, this wants to be the udev config).
once everything is in place, you want to start up the software from a (preferably Linux) command prompt:

$ rfcat -r

that should get you into an interactive Python shell and have you up and running.

i don't know if the YS1 you received is faulty. Kali, at least at one point, ran RfCat pretty well.
i use Ubuntu a lot myself, and they also have a live option worth checking out. i can actually install Ubuntu on an externally attached drive and boot from it. you might try doing that for a bit, so you have a real bootable Linux system and you don't have to muck with your Windows install.

but definitely read the README. and if you're new and aren't easily offended, i recommend reading it a second time.
hopefully you'll be up and running in no time.
