For **this month** (yeah, September) we're going to start a new DevQuest.

### QUEST #008: World Traveler

- **Goal:** Develop two sets for games that were never released officially in English.
- **Point of Contact:** {% rauser Infernox %}
- **Requirements:**
 1. All claims intended for this quest must follow normal procedure.
 2. They must be full sets. Fodder for the Progression Only hub won't count towards the badge.
 3. If you already have a suitable game claimed, your progress must be under 50% complete to count towards the quest.
 4. Any sets intended for World Traveler will not stack with any other quests based around developing new content.
 5. Games that possess English translation patches do count towards the quest.
 6. Hacks and homebrew **do not** count towards the quest. Unlicensed titles **might** count as long as they aren't blatant bootleg ports or hacks of another game. If you're unsure if a game is valid, contact Infernox.
 7. **Once your sets are finished, run it by Infernox so your progress can be marked as complete.**

title: "Is Quality Really a Goal?"
author: meleu
toc: true
---

> "We build computer systems the way we build our cities: over time, without a plan, on top of ruins."
> -- [Ellen Ullman](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ellen_Ullman), computer programmer and author.

## Intro

This article covers some parts of the RA history, focusing on the "quality" topic. How it was in the past and how we're working on it today.

If you enjoy the RALore, keep reading.

## How to know what is good?

Those who are with us since before 2017 will likely remember what RA was like when it came to quality. Achievements for starting a game weren't rare. Also some other ones for having a "game over". Many grindy, tedious, "impossible" ones...

The simple gut reaction is that this kind of thing happens due to incompetence. How wasn't it just avoided in the first place?

Turns out that the opening quote opening to this article is not a sarcastic joke, like it may seem. What Mrs. Ullman says about computers, can also be applied to the way we build things here on RetroAchievements. And it's not a joke, it's the statement of a fact.

The point is: how to know what is good if we don't know what is bad? We need ruins to build something better on top of it.

## Why poor quality work is necessary

So, in order to do something good, one need to do a lot of poor quality work. Of course each person is different, both in terms of intellect and skills, but doing better with each iteration is a key factor for doing something good at some point.

There's still a problem though: when you finish doing something you think is good, a short time later you are already thinking about how to make it even better. It may even reach a point where you won't think it's that good anymore... (for the hardcore nerds, this happens because of [neuroplasticity](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neuroplasticity)).

Uh... but... Do we really need to see every single newcomer producing **the same** low quality work over and over again?

## How to avoid repeating the same mistakes?

In the pre-historic days of RA there wasn't any documentation. Then a member who was brave enough to open the Memory Inspector could find an address for "game over" and become excited. "Hooray!! I found an address meaning something! Let me create an achievement with this address real quick!". As you can imagine, this led to the creation of a lot of low quality content.

Fortunately for us, RA fans, some ancient members (like {% rauser Brian %}, {% rauser cirellio %} and the RA creator {% rauser Scott %}) probably made a lot of mistakes but were wise enough to write about their findings, and were generous enough to post them on the forums. Many achievement creation docs we have today, were built on top of their findings.

Thanks to their effort, today we can avoid repeating the same mistakes.

## Experiment and iterate

Even with a lot of documentation, to fill the technical gaps, there are still a lot of non-technical mistakes, like bad achievement's design, here and there producing some "basic" achievement sets.

Currently this is not a really serious problem, since we have Code Reviewers and QA Team preventing really poor achievement sets to be promoted as official sets. We have also the revision process, where people can improve the sets over time.

So, it's ok to promote an "acceptable" set, and then enrich it in a future revision.

This way people can start creating achievements as soon as they can, and get better in the next iteration.

But well, it wasn't so "smooth" in the past. And is surely still a source of discontent here and there.

## A little of RALore

In the past, when the revision process didn't exist. Changing an achievement set were very rare. Even if the set had poorly designed achievements like "start the game as player X", demoting it could be considered a severe offense to some people (either the author or some players who had unlocked such achievement).

Somehow there was a belief in the collective unconscious that once a set is published it's definitive. This "rule" wasn't verbalized anywhere. We didn't have docs neither a Code of Conduct, but that's how it was in the past.

The problem with such scenario is that, regarding quality, it was very unfavorable.

Key problems:

1. It doesn't allow achievement sets to be improved
2. It makes some creators who care a lot about RA deter newbies from start creating
3. (consequence of point 2) It doesn't allow creators to "learn to be good" (make something bad, and then improve it)

With the benefit with the hindsight, now I see that what we were unconsciously trying to avoid was just the complaints coming from the players. We were sacrificing our biggest asset (the achievements) to please people who just consume what we produce. Just because people want to "master" a game and then consider it as done.

That was causing a lot of tension between those who actually put a lot of effort producing content for the project.

Fortunately it's now a problem of the past. But, again, we needed to face those problems in order to fix them.

Although we have left some wounds, over time we're slowly maturing. Today the revision process is working reasonably well.

We even tried to open the voting to the whole community, and faced a sad reality: those who don't put any effort to make RA better can't vote with the same weight of those who spend a lot of their time working for RA.

Most of the players (not all of them) are here to brag about their site awards, and "quality" is relegated as secondary. After many heated dicussions we decided to close the revision voting only for achievement creators again. And this seems to be working fine so far.

## So, is quality a goal?

Answering the question on the title of this article: No, quality is not a goal, it's a road.

It is critical to understand that due to our malleable standards of evaluation, this process has no end, ever. We are never going to reach some utopian state where everything is perfectly satisfying. The fundamental reward of an improvement process is the experience of betterment, not some mythical destination.

Today Bijou saw a wonderful rainbow and another Ham-Ham, Prince Bo, fell down from it because his magical umbrella, which allows him to create rainbow, loses its colors. It seems like that the same thing which caused the umbrella to lose the colors also changed several objects in the Ham-Ham base. Can you find all 10 differences in the lower image?

## About

Originally published by Ultravision in 1982 and later re-released by Froggo, Karate is considered one of the worst Atari 2600 games ever released. The game was supposedly designed by black belt Joseph Amelio however upon release it received poor reviews.

- **Set by**: [endtimes][20]
- **Guide by**: [Schlim][19]

## Introduction

- **Set Difficulty**: 1/10
- **Time Estimate**: 15 minutes
- **Missable Achievements**: 0

## Gameplay

The gameplay is very poor and requires more luck than skill. Strategizing moves might be possible but generally mashing random moves and hoping you get luckier than the AI works better.
You control the fighter on the right. You can combine the fire button as well as a direction on the joystick to perform 5 different moves. Each move offers different points added to your score. Knockdowns can occur when the player connects a perfect up kick to the face.
The winner is determined by who has the most points after the two minute timer finishes or whoever reaches 900 first. Once a fighter wins this means they progress up a belt in this order:

White -> Orange -> Green -> Yellow -> Black -> Tournament Champion

This means that when you lose the opponent CPU AI becomes harder even when losing the first fight.

The manual says that *Difficulty A* is slow mode and *Difficulty B* is fast mode however I couldn’t see much of a difference.

## Achievement Guide

| ![Image][14] | [**Hachidan**][13] |
| ![Image][16] | [**Karate Champion**][15] |

Here I will explain how to guarantee a win pretty much every time. Begin the game by walking to the bottom of the screen. Once there spam *Left + Fire* and your fighter will repeatedly do up kicks. Since up kicks give the highest score you won’t need to do any other move. The opponent will continue to walk into the up kicks. Winning by knockout is very common with this method. If you fail the first fight then reset the game since the opponent will go up a belt.
> TIP: Enable turbo fire on your *Fire* button to make this task even easier and consistent. This also works well with fast forward.

| ![Image][2] | [Staring Contest][1]|

Load the game and press select to set it to mode 001. After a second or two the timer should automatically start counting and the players wont move. Simply wait (or fast forward) until you win the championship. If the opponent moves just reload the ROM and try again.

| ![Image][4] | [Get Back Here!][3]|

Once a fight begins hold left until you reach the other side and the achievement will appear.

| ![Image][6] | [Sweep the leg by kicking the face][5]|

Should be achieved in casual gameplay. Perform an Up kick ( Left + Fire ) on the opponent and they should eventually be knocked down. In my experience this is more common when you’re completely horizontal to the opponent.

| ![Image][18] | [Hiraki-Ashi Master][17]|

The aforementioned tactic is, believe it or not, too powerful for this achievement. The achievement requires you to win on the timer and the previous tactic usually results in a knockout. Simply walk back as far as possible then go down and perform the tactic from there and you should get just under 900 before the timer runs out. The opponent might strike first, if this occurs then simply reset against another white belt until you get them in the up kick ‘stun lock’.

- Set by: {% rauserpic SporyTike %}
- Writeup by: {% rauserpic BeekBeek85 %}

Super Smash Bros. 64 was the game to kick off a phenomenal fighting game franchise involving Nintendo's biggest names fighting against each other, and soon after, other companies' big stars as well. But, with how big the Smash Bros series has gotten, the original game feels rather... small in comparison. 12 Fighters, roughly 11 or 12 Stages, and a straight forward Classic Mode. But, what if there was more? This is where this hack in question comes in. Smash Remix rebrands Smash 64 into a brand new experience you can do with friends or by yourself. In addition to the original 12 characters and all the stages, there's much more content with many little details crammed in.

Each new character offers a new playstyle that may either originate from a later series installment (ex. Bowser) or even play much differently than ever before (ex. Wario). Additionally, certain characters can be altered and allow for new game styles, including Metal Mario and Giant DK from the mainline 1P Mode. Speaking of, the Single Player Campaign comes with Remix 1P, offering a challenge in the form of new fighters and new stages. However, aside from a couple of challenges such as the Kirby Hat Team, no playthrough is the same. Even if you fight a character you fought before, their stage can also be different as well. But take extra caution: Remix 1P will require only the upmost skill when playing on Very Hard. Take the time to practice characters old and new before diving in. And may you be successful in earning 25 Points per Very Hard Remix 1P. Thank you, SporyTike for making the set. Keep up the great work. And Special Thanks to RustyJimjob45 for originally attempting the set, your efforts shall be remembered.

## Quake II (Nintendo 64)

|------|---------|-------|
| Quake II | Nintendo 64 | First Person Shooter |

- Set by: {% rauserpic guindev %}
- Writeup by: {% rauserpic Aekko %}

Quake II, originally released in 1997 for PC by id Software, blew everyone away with a combination of graphics, sound, gameplay and performance. Anyone with only a home console at this time had to sit by the sideline and wait with baited breath; "will we get our own version of this?", all while hoping beyond hope that the latest monster of a PC FPS could be miraculously crammed onto console systems without the game turning into a pile of unplayable crap in the process. Given the usual treatment of previous id Software titles -- Wolfenstein 3D & Doom had both seen some excellent (and admittedly some crap) releases on all sorts of systems over the years, and Quake itself was already being shown off as well-into development for N64 -- a half-decent port of Quake II for consoles did seem apparent.

And then it happened; Quake II found its way onto N64! Was it worth the wait?

Sort of. Quake II on N64 is certainly a mixed bag when it comes to quality, and once you get past the usual jazz of screenshots and into playing the game proper, it really only resembles its namesake on the surface. In short? It's an impressive yet disappointing affair due to a lot of cut content (although it does feature an almost-exclusive map set), and an example of a project just being that bit too ambitious for the targeted hardware. Nonetheless, it remains playable enough to fight through until the end.

Immediately, the general performance of the game becomes the first victim. Things will hover around 30fps provided that nothing is going on and you're looking at little more than a nearby wall, but happily sink like a brick into the low 20's the moment the action starts, even dipping alarmingly close to single-digit performance during some of the more intense firefights. While said firefights involve about five enemies at most, this can still be a real dog to tolerate at the best of times, and the constantly sluggish performance when trying to shoot a few monsters soon becomes an issue during those moments which combine platform-jumping with combat; all too easily it can result in restarting the entire level through no real fault of your own. Keeping in mind that this is with all the benefits of the Expansion Pak! I dread to think how the game performs in those situations without the extra power this small addition provides.

The visual quality itself isn't exactly great either. The HUD weapons are sprite-based, which would be fine if not for the incredibly jerky and often-distracting animations they involve, and the general texture quality on level geometry is compressed beyond recognition in some cases, though the moody coloured lighting goes some way in keeping the world somewhat interesting. Enemy models retain most of their visual clarity, so you can thankfully recognize the various horrors of Stroggos by more than just their sound cues. Speaking of which, the sound here is possibly the game's strongest point, with most of the sounds for weapons, enemies and environment being carried over intact. While the new OST is lacking the raw fast-paced guitar-driven energy of Sonic Mayhem's original offering, Aubrey Hodges goes ahead and does a more than adequate job with his trademark ambient approach, along the lines of his own prior work on the system with Doom 64 and Quake.

So is it worth playing? I'd say so, even if just to experience the exclusive map set. Sure, it's not the greatest example of how to make a PC FPS work on a console, but it's far from insufferable. The achievement set itself for Quake II on N64 is absolutely fine too; there's nothing within that demands you learn any ridiculous speedrunning strategies or engine exploits to succeed. Sure it's a frustrating game at times just to get one or two enemy encounters to play out as you need them to (the Gladiator in particular is a real POS because of this), but it can be cleared with a bit of patience and determination (with some of trial-and-error). You don't need to be a master of the N64 to achieve 200% here -- I'd never even *played* this port until the set was published and blazed through it within two days. Just for the love of god, use/enable the Expansion Pak!

|------|---------|-------|
| Legend of Mana | PlayStation | Action RPG |

- Set by: {% rauserpic Alena %}
- Writeup by: {% rauserpic Shianderu %}

Legend of Mana (Seiken Densetsu in Japan) is an Action-RPG (meaning the fights are not turn-based) released by Square Soft (now called Square Enix) for the late PlayStation 1 in 99 in the Orient and in 2000 in West and was a milestone for both the console and the Mana franchise (the last game, Trials of Mana, had been released for the Super Nintendo). If you like role-playing games, with countless possibilities of weapons, armor and other things with a touch of action to shake things up, you should Play This Set!

The story takes place in the fantasy world of Fa'Diel, centuries after a war that involved different races from that world (humans, fairies, demons, etc.) in search of what little was left of the Tree of Mana's power. After the war ended, the tree went into a kind of hibernation to regain its powers and all the lands in the world were stored in artifacts. One day, the protagonist wakes up and has a mission to restore the world, helping other characters (through quests) so that they return to believe in the power of Mana, thus restoring the divine tree

One thing worth noting is that this game is completely non-linear. There is no story line or direct motivation on the part of the protagonist. The story and the world progress through quests that involve different game characters in the most diverse adventures (from finding a hammer for a blacksmith to defeating a gigantic tyrant dragon). This can give a sense of meaninglessness to the plot, but for those who pay attention, you will see that this is not the case. Furthermore, I dare say that there are 3 major stories, just to speak: the story of the Jumi Knights (beings that have jewels on their chests that work like a heart and are quite powerful), the story of the dragons (Larc, Sierra and Drakonis) and the story of the rivalry between humans and demons (Escad, Daena, Matilda and Irwin). By completing any of these journeys, you open the way to the end of the game, inside the Mana Tree itself.

Yoko Shimomura did an exquisite job on the soundtrack to this game and it's easily one of the best tracks I've ever seen in an RPG, so much so that this game is both one of my favorite RPGs (along with Chrono Cross) and one of my favorite games

This game features achievements for each of the game's 67 missions (68 if you count the last one), an achievement for each boss, and those miscellaneous ones to give it a refresh in the standard gameplay. You could say it's the same as the achievements of the Steam remaster version, but I guarantee you: it's not. I've completed all challenges on both RA and Steam and the RA version has a lot more content. However, the challenges are fair and you won't spend a lot of time stuck on a boss, as long as you understand some essential game mechanics like the equipment forging and the instrument forging. There are specific tutorials on the internet for these 2, including a forge simulator, for you to test any recipe to create your items and see what happens! It's a lot of fun to play with the forge and create super powerful weapons with over 300 power!

Protip: stay tuned with 4 very important things! First, there are a lot of quests to miss in this game, so revisit areas whenever possible and talk to important characters at all times! You never know when something new might come up! Second, always after each event, talk to the cactus and report to it, as you can only report the most recent completed event to it! Third, the placement of artifacts is of paramount importance! There are 3 events that depend solely on the levels of certain mana spirits in certain locations, so keep an eye out for the tutorial on how artifacts influence others around you! And fourth, in Duma Desert, there are chests that can only be collected during 2 specific quests that take place there, if you don't collect one of them, you will lose the achievement and have to try again in a new game!

And, of course, the biggest tip of all: have multiple saves (both save states and game saves) at different points in the story. This helps a lot to avoid the frustration of having lost an item or event and having to lose progress or having to play everything from 0!

Have fun, guys!

- Set by: {% rauserpic pinguupinguu %}, {% rauserpic SporyTike %}

The story of how Clueless: Fashion came to be is an interesting one. Made as a tie in to the movie Clueless (1995), it was announced in 2008, alongside two other Nintendo DS Games that similarly never saw the light of day: Mean Girls and Pretty in Pink. All three games were based on the teen comedy flicks by Paramount Digital Entertainment, ranging from the 80s to the early 2000s. The game was scheduled to be released on January 2009 in North America, but due to unknown reasons, the game was never actually released. Even some sites such as ESRB and Glyphic Entertainment's official website still claim the game was released at that time.

Now let's talk about how the game actually came to be playable today. On March 25, 2021 the Youtuber Bobdunga made a documentary about these lost games called "The Girl Games Of Lost Media (Part 1) - Documentary" where she documents the history and troubled development of the aforementioned games. Through a documentary, she spread news that she did infact came into possession of Clueless Fashion and shared gameplay of the game on her channel.
Well when the set got released as a collab between SporyTike and Pinguu I saw potential in the game and I was the first one to jump on it day one. The game is typical shovelware and unrefined due to not being a final product, but It's actually a pretty decent time waster. If you ever played a Surgery game or a minigame similar to it like the Biology class on Bully, you will get a similar idea of what the core mechanic of the game is: using the stylus to stitch clothes together, The story follows Cher on her rise to become a Fashionista star with increased challenges on the styles and clothes she must make. The set covers everything the game has to offer from start to end and you can finish the main story mode while culminating on the most challenging test of fortitude a game like this can throw at you: make six dresses in a row without failing, done on the longest and hardest design available. This task is soul crushing but the game rewards you with one of the better soundtracks that I have ever listened to in a DS game. With each dress completed, the soundtracks goes from calm pop music to hard metal signifying that this is the moment of truth where you either complete the last dress or you fail as a Fashionista and must start from the first dress again.

This achievement will most likely take you 30 minutes of precise control of the tools and the DS tactile controls, so you better be ready! Now, the end game of the game isn't about finishing the main story and becoming a star. If you noticed throughout your journey, you can buy all kinds of items, ranging from base patterns, different colored fabrics, to even contracts from models. Now, you must earn enough money to basically buy all the stock of all the Beverly Hill's stores. This is not, and I must say again, a free points game. You will end up grinding for hours on end the same task to earn enough money. After completing the main story and collectibles, you must get a Perfect rating on every single task. I must say this is not a set for the faint of heart, but If you feel like facing a good challenge, or think you are a hardcore gamer that can face anything a game can throw at you, then this is the set for you. I enjoyed my time with it. Even if you don't want to go for the mastery, I recommend giving the game a try, as you'll end up having a lot of fun. If this game was actually released and polished during its time, it would have been an actual classic.

- Set by: {% rauserpic pinguupinguu %}
- Writeup by: {% rauserpic BlotchJBMR %}

The DS Lego games are the front-runners in the mindless style of children’s games. Each game has an ease and accessibility that even the likes of the Mario series can not reach, yet it never feels dull or uninspired. LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventures is the first of three in the series I had owned as a kid. Everything about them, the soundtrack, cutscenes and overall vibe just remind me of long car rides. The soundtrack has such a unique sound to it, being instantly recognizable. It somehow feels like it was made with the knowledge that you would spend hours listening to it as a kid replaying the levels, trying to find new secrets or ways to break the game, or just falling asleep with your DS open at your side.

The cutscenes portray events in the movie while maintaining the humor that would be seen later in the Lego movies. While never having a line of dialogue, I was able to understand the story of the games without having watched the movies. The game stays incredibly laidback throughout the entirety of it. Deaths result in minimal setback, respawning you where you died only leaving behind a couple of studs, the game's currency. Puzzles never require too much thought as they usually just require switching to a different character to use their specific ability. This is even made easier by having the character you need’s portrait flashing on the bottom screen. Speaking of the bottom screen, the game never feels intrusive with touch controls. Most actions that are done on the touch screen can also just be done by pressing the Y button, removing the requirement of ever pulling out the stylus. The only other time the bottom screen is used is as an expansion of the top down driving segments, adding more verticality to them. These sections aren’t overly frequent and are generally at the very least bearable, but still the least fun part of the game.

Sticking with the laid back feel of the game, the set by pinguupinguu isn’t ridden with precise or difficult challenges, rather just asking the player to more or less fully experience everything in the game. I highly recommend this set to anyone who wants to take a break from all the challenge of life and just have some mindless fun.

- Set by: {% rauserpic voiceofautumn %}
- Writeup by: {% rauserpic Chauckles %}

In Pokemon FireRed: Rocket Edition, you play the role of a new member of the criminal gang Team Rocket, committing petty crimes and following orders from higher ups rather then taking on a grand adventure to be the very best. Along the way you'll make new "friends", gain a reputation as a dangerous criminal, and even uncover a few mysteries surrounding a pair of young up-and-coming Trainers and Rocket Boss Giovanni's past.

The game's main draw is that, as a criminal, you'll be largely shunned by the population and denied services. Gate guards will block your path, Pokémon Gym assistants will shoo you as soon as you enter their gyms, and other citizens who are normally generous will refuse to hand out gifts (Though, amusingly enough, Pokémon Centers will still accept you with open arms. Even the dregs of society deserve basic care!). The biggest obstacle, however, is that stores will not allow you to purchase goods. This means no reliable access to healing items, exploration tools, and most importantly Poke Balls. A Pokémon Trainer who can't catch any Pokémon won't get very far.

This is where Rocket Edition's new mechanic comes in: Beating trainers in battle allows you to steal one of their Pokémon (With some caveats). This changes how the game is played pretty significantly. Instead of capturing creatures on your own and showing them love and care to make them stronger, Pokémon are now disposable, and only useful until you manage to snag something stronger to replace it with. The steep level curve means that battles are not only difficult, but highly rewarding as you'll be able to turn around and take a Pokémon that gave you problems and turn it into someone else's problem.

Admittedly, the game's last act is poorly executed, causing the carefully-crafted theft system to fall apart, and much of the game's writing is trite, with many jokes sitting at varying degrees of poor taste, but I believe any Pokémon fan looking for a breath of fresh air should strongly consider joining Team Rocket's ranks, even if just for a bit.

- Set by: {% rauserpic SporyTike %}, {% rauserpic MGNS8M %}
- Writeup by: {% rauserpic Wimpyfox %}

Sonic R is one of those sonic games with a relatively awful reputation, which isn’t totally unjustified. The biggest issue with the game I’ve heard from critics is the strange/bad controls which I feel somewhat stems from a misunderstanding of the way you are intended to play the game, the characters seem at first to play like any other platformer, which makes their weak turning and overall stiff movement incredibly jarring. But you must remember, this is a racing game, not a platformer, therefore you must control the characters as such, and once you recognize this and become familiar with the tracks, this game suddenly becomes a lot more fun, at least in my opinion.

And that leads me to the Achievement set for this game, as with most Sonic games, Sonic R is a game that becomes a lot better as you the player get better at it, and this set practically forces you to master every element of the game to complete it. The game has insanely unbalanced characters, and this set will force you to play as the worst of the worst, playing this way is a real challenge, and is something you would most likely never really choose to do else wise, but once you become competent with these terrible characters and switch back to any of the good ones, it’s the equivalent of training with weighted clothing on and finally being able to take it off. Making the at first painstakingly annoying controls, seem like a breeze and a whole lot more fun once you’ve learnt how to use them correctly and are familiar with all the track layouts and shortcuts. If this set didn’t exist, I feel as if I would never have appreciated this game for the fun you can potentially have with it, as without the achievements this game is insanely short, giving the player little time to adapt to anything before 100%ing it.

If you’re like me, and you just played this game for ten minutes and immediately dropped it due to the off-putting controls, I recommend giving the game a second try with this set.

Although RetroAchievements has no shortage of Pokémon sets, and hacks of Pokémon games, Rubicate went the extra mile with this particular one. He actually dug into Pokémon Red and created a whole new hack based on challenges. Using a code-based system, any player can create any number of unique challenges in this hack, not counting the ones in the RA set mentioned here. And boy, does this set have some challenges. A good half of the set is your typical monotype challenges, like with the Pokémon Midori set. However, with “Reg Red”, it is a little more forgiving with what you can and cannot do before being locked out of the achievements. After these come the creative ones, from Team Rocket (you play by stealing other trainers Pokémon), Discount Ditto (you only have a Ditto with 4 mimic moves), No Exp, Roguelike (permadeath), and many others. The de facto “just-how-good-at-Gen-1-are-you?” challenge here is known as Rip and Tear, and it cranks up all the trainer’s Pokémon by 300%, including the elite 4. This set is most certainly not meant for the beginner if one intends to master it. A wealth of knowledge and experience is required before entering this set of challenges. Come for the monotypes. Stay for the four unique Brock challenges, and enjoy your time with this set!

When people think of beat ‘em ups, they’re likely reminded of games such as Battletoads, Streets of Rage, TMNT, or Final Fight. However for a lucky few their minds may wander back to the Sega Saturn classic hybrid Beat ‘em Up/RPG: Guardian Heroes. This combination of genres was both a welcome and uncommon experience for the time.

Gameplay is as fast paced and combo-heavy as any great Beat ‘em Up should be. Players will find themselves thinking about spacing, punishing and combo-stringing similar to a fighting game, while at the same time managing stats by placing skill points at the end of each stage. Of the five playable Story Mode characters each have their own special abilities that scale with their class-specific stats. In addition to stats and character-specific abilities, the game also features a karma system, if it wasn’t RPG enough for you yet.

The story begins with your rag tag party of five awakening the legendary Undead Hero, a golden-armored skeleton with powerful abilities. The party realizes they are able to command the Undead Hero, and set out on their journey to discover the truth. There are several different paths you can take to traverse the total of thirty stages, leading to an eventual seven different endings. Four of the seven endings rely on the karma system, so if you want to see them all, you’ll have to be a bit naught and a bit nice.

The amount of sprites on screen possible for the Saturn feels almost like a modern beat ‘em up with a retro look. The art is unique, rarely repeating assets throughout its massive thirty stages, the character design mirrors this attention to detail with unique and interesting visuals and back stories for each. The OST is nothing to sneeze at, either, whether you’re in the mood to shred, or to bounce around to an eclectic jazz saxophone, it’s got you covered.

When I decided to make a set for Guardian Heroes, I admittedly had never heard of the series, but I quickly learned why it was the top requested game for the Saturn. It took me on a journey of beat ‘em up badassery and RPG thought provoking fun, and really showed me what I was missing by ignoring the Saturn’s library for so many years. If you like punching, kicking, and skeletons that you can tell to yell really loud, check out Guardian Heroes.

The story takes place 20 years after the first game, and you can choose to play as either Claude C. Kenni, or Rena Lanford. Claude gets sent to the planet Expel near the village of Arlia by accident and runs into Rena who is being attacked by a monster. Heroic as Claude wants to be, he decides to save her by using his Phase Gun. Because of this, Rena mistakes him to be the 'Hero of Light', who has come to save the planet from the disasters taking place on it caused by the Sorcery Globe. The Sorcery Globe was believed to have been a mysterious meteor that crashed into Expel a few months ago, corrupting the land and the animals around it, turning them into evil demons. Claude eventually convinces Rena and the mayor of Arlia that he is not the Hero of Light, but he would still like to investigate this Sorcery Globe, which is located on the continent of El. They set out on their journey and meet various people along the way who join them in their quest. After a long journey they finally arrive at the continent of El and find Eluria Tower where the town of Eluria used to be. Here they learn the truth behind the events of the Sorcery Globe, and the people behind it...

The game has a lot of character interactions, and you can develop better relations between your party members by completing so called 'Private Actions (PA)'. This is a very important factor during the game, as it affects the endings and whether or not you can get a 'paired' ending between party members. Did I mention there are 86(!) endings? You won't be able to see all of them in one playthrough, but the game has plenty of replayability since you can't recruit every party member in one playthrough either. Besides manipulating the endings, affection levels between your characters can also be used as a requirement to see certain PAs in the game. Additionally, it's even a factor in combat. Rena for example, will heal and support a party member she likes more than other characters!

Also returning in this game is Item Creation. There is a wide availability of items that can be created, and characters can learn Talents to help them successfully create the items. A character can learn Specialties as well once they distribute enough points in certain Skills. This will again help them further during Item Creation and additionally also boosts a character's stats (HP, MP, STR, DEF, etc.) In order to level these Skills, you need Skill Points. These are obtained once a character levels up. The higher the level they become, the more SP they get per level-up.

If you thought you were done after beating the game - Think again... A few more challenges await you. The legendary Cave of Trials (Maze of Tribulations) unlocks once you save at the final save point of the game. This is a bonus dungeon that holds some of the most powerful enemies in the game, including one of the optional super bosses. On top of all that, if you were completing Private Actions, you may have found a way to make the final boss immensely stronger. Do you have what it takes to complete these challenges?

There is also a feature called 'Voice Collection'. In Star Ocean 2 your characters have various lines during combat. Whether they get hurt, attack an enemy, or support your allies, all these lines get stored in the Voice Collection. Unlock enough of the Voice Collection and you will eventually unlock Galaxy and Universe modes. These modes make the enemies more difficult. In particular in Universe mode, the enemies gain a massive boost to their stats, making it a lot more difficult and a very nice challenge.

The set covers the vast majority of the game and makes you go along on various side quests and challenges as well. There are interesting boss challenges and there's even an arena to complete. As previously mentioned, you will eventually unlock Universe mode. Of course there are achievements tied to doing things in this mode, so do whatever it takes to master Universe mode!

Aim for the various endings, complete the challenges, or even just watch all the character interactions during the PAs, and become part of this vast ocean! Play this set!

| ~Hack~ Ghostbusters Remastered | NES | Action |

- Set by: {% rauserpic wilhitewarrior %}
- Writeup by: {% rauserpic Etron %}

Are you troubled by strange noises in the middle of the night? Do you experience feelings of dread in your basement or attic? Have you or your family ever seen a spook, specter or ghost? If the answer is "yes", then don't wait another minute! Grab your backup rom copy of Ghostbusters for the NES, apply the Ghostbusters Remastered patch, and **Play This Set!**

The original [Ghostbusters (NES)](https://retroachievements.org/game/1709) game is based on the 1984 blockbuster movie of the same name and was designed by the legendary David Crane (the designer of [Pitfall!](https://retroachievements.org/game/11191) and [A Boy and His Blob](https://retroachievements.org/game/1590)). Propelled by the success of the movie, the game was widely ported to many systems where it garnered solid reviews and sold quite well initially. Being a **huge** Ghostbusters fan, and the fact Ghostbusters was one of the first NES games in my limited collection, I played the game often despite its flaws. I’ll admit that the biggest issue for me was that I wanted ghost busting action and the game was more of a business simulation with action mini games. I could get over the sub-par graphics of washed-out greys, greens, and blues with very little animation. I was just learning to read and write so didn’t notice that the game was full of poor grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors including the infamous misspelling of *“conglaturation”* when you win the game. That misspelling is something I never would have seen as a child since I always died climbing the stairs before the final confrontation with Gozer on the roof tops. Unlike other ports of the game, the NES version didn’t allow you to shoot the ghosts to stun them so you had to avoid the ghosts' horrible hit detection while climbing the stairs. Before the advent of walkthroughs to help me through this mess, I instead ended up moving on to better games.

When I saw that [~hack~ Ghostbusters Remastered (NES)](https://retroachievements.org/game/14692) was part of the *Unwanted* games selection I had to try it out to see if they improved the game. I was pleasantly surprised to find that NESRocks addressed many of the above criticisms while keeping the core gameplay the same. The most noticeable improvement is almost all of the graphics have been updated with many of the new assets coming from the superior Famicom version of Ghostbusters 2. Under the hood, a lot of the grindy elements have been streamlined and the shop prices are more reasonable with some of the items being fully refundable! The controls and hit detection have been greatly improved as well which makes the stairs section possible without needing to buy the most expensive shop items or rely on a programming glitch. After so many years, I was finally able to save the world and millions of registered voters. Overall, the remastered experience greatly improves the game and shows that the original game design wasn’t bad, just poorly implemented and ported.

The achievements for Ghostbusters Remastered incorporate memorable quotes from the movie and encourage many different playstyles that I would not have attempted normally. They add challenges like a speed run to enter Zuul’s building as quickly as possible to earn [Are You the Keymaster?](https://retroachievements.org/achievement/129051) Alternately, you could try to make as much money as possible before the world ends to become [Rich Beyond Our Wildest Dreams!](https://retroachievements.org/achievement/129042) You’re also rewarded for changing up the build order and buying the more expensive shop items first while [Cleanin' Up the Town!](https://retroachievements.org/achievement/129047) If you’re up for a real challenge, try attempting the damageless boss fight with Gozer and be one of the few who have unlocked [This Chick is TOAST!](https://retroachievements.org/achievement/129060) The combination of this stellar set and great remaster has redeemed a game that I gave up on so long ago.

RAdvantage is where you share your tricks about how to unlock that one specific challenging achievement that took you hours to do.

Examples:

- where you farmed extra-lives
- where's that spot where the boss can't hit you
- or even your super-personal approach to get it done!

And if you strategy is hard to describe with words, no problem! Send us some images or even a video (like the ones you'll see below for Metroid Fusion and Final Fight 3).

## Vectorman (Mega Drive)

| Achievement | Game |
|------|---------|
| Insane Vector | Vectorman (Mega Drive) |

- Tip by: {% rauserpic TindalosKeeper %}

The game is fair and fun to play! Very generous with the lives you can get with his score/item multiplier feature!

Do not be afraid in dying a couple of times to gain knowledge on a level before trying a winning run! Just expect to lose about 2-4 lives per level if you don't upgrade your max health! To help you better, there's a way to get 10 Lives on 2 Levels: Day 3 and Day 9 (Day 1 has a secret area for lives but not to that BIG extent, enough for getting to Day 3 with major mess-ups), there's a TV that you can break that gives you a 10x Multiplier, in which you have to run to get the other TV that gives you a 1-up, in turn, you'll get 10 1-ups in one go!

Use Level Select and explore those two levels and you'll understand where the locations are! Just be mindful that using Level Select voids some of the achievements, particularly this one, so you got to have every bit of knowledge on the game to manage it through! Seems like an impossible task but with the amount of life ups you can get AND the possibility of upgrading your Max Life, you should have very little trouble! Even you'll have fun taking on such difficulty!

Good luck!

## Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PlayStation)

| Achievement | Game |
|------|---------|
| Death of Death | Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (PlayStation) |

- Tip by: {% rauserpic affftedio %}

Like most no damage achievements, you can just play safe and take your time. However, things get tricky once Death starts shooting green skulls. They are way harder to dodge than the previous attacks, but there's one easy trick here! Since Death is a boss with attacks tied to what phase it's in, you can predict what it does next with some practice. Once you know you're entering the troublesome phase, just jump on it and spam dive kicks as fast as you can. If you did that right, you end the phase before it even starts. Then, just go back, play it safe and read Death's actions.

## Puzzle Bobble 3 (Arcade)

| Achievement | Game |
|------|---------|
| One Coin 2.5 Traveler | Puzzle Bobble 3 (Arcade) |

- Tip by: {% rauserpic Shioxus %}

One Coin 2.5 Traveler can be a tricky achievement even [i]with[/i] a solid route planned out. Without a route, it can be downright daunting. I'll share the route I used to get the achievement in hopes of giving any One Coin hopefuls a launching off point. In my experience, the safest route is B>D>H>M>R>? (the final stage is called "?"). If you find yourself having trouble with stage B, starting with stage A works too.

## Pokemon Snap (Nintendo 64)

| Achievement | Game |
|------|---------|
| Cave Adventure | Pokemon Snap (Nintendo 64)

- Tip by: {% rauserpic Fridge %}

Slow your speed in Pokemon Snap for the perfect shot! I had a hard time with this achievement and Articuno. Until, I found online that you spam C-buttons left and right so you can stall yourself! This works on every level and can help with the sizing and timing of Snaps.

## Rugrats: Search for Reptar (PlayStation)

| Game | Console | Genre |
|------|---------|-------|
| Rugrats: Search for Reptar | PlayStation | Adventure |

- Tip by: {% rauserpic StingX2 %}

This is a tip for the whole game.

There will be many situations when you are on the clock and on the second floor of the Pickles home. As you may know, babies aren't great at climbing up and downstairs. But, never fear, as this game lacks fall damage. So, if you aren't currently in motion, you can jump off the top of the stairs and fly toward the bottom. If you are running even slightly though the jump trick will fail.

## Final Fight 3 (SNES)

| Achievement | Game |
|------|---------|
| The Leader of the Skull Cross Gang | Final Fight 3 (SNES)

- Tip by {% rauserpic Valenstein %}

The best characters to do it are Guy and Lucia, due to the distance of their dodge. I'm gonna show 2 fighting modes: an easier one, taking advantage of a small "bug" in the game, and another one going to a more intense combat, with a small risk of losing a life.

- "Easy Mode" - we need to lock Black in the bottom right corner, putting him away from the screen. The best way to do it is when he uses the spin, because he stays in the right spot. Do a dodge movement and go to his back and take him down. He's going to move forward but will never attack, until the lifebar becomes yellow, which is when the screen moves forward automatically. At this point you just need to be careful and easily defeat him. Obs.: what happens here is that Black only attacks when he's at a certain distance, and as we're never allowing him to reach such distance, we can beat him.

- "Normal Mode" - this fight is based only in dodging and attacking only when he throws his daggers. Avoid going to him under any ohter circumstances in order to avoid unnecessary damage.

Here's a video showing both ways (Easy Mode in the first part of the video, Normal Mode starts at 2:42):

## Metroid Fusion (GBA)

| Achievement | Game |
|------|---------|
| Wrecked SA-X | Metroid Fusion (Game Boy Advance) |
| Bare-bones | Metroid Fusion (Game Boy Advance) |

- Tip by {% rauserpic Valenstein %}

This is a trick about how to defeat SA-X in a much simpler way, which can bring good results when trying to unlock [Wrecked SA-X](https://retroachievements.org/achievement/5542) and [Bare-bones](https://retroachievements.org/achievement/5654), hopefully making those challenges a little less frustrating.

In the first SA-X fighting form (the hardest part of the challenge) she'll always be running from a side to the other in the bottom-left corner, reaching a point where she can't move. This will depend a little on RNG so she can do the right move, allowing us to lock her. Another important point: after locking her you'll need to take good care controling the right timing to charge your weapon. A minimum flaw can ruin this strategy.

In the second fighting form, there's no secret, you only need to stay in the highest place of the map, charging and shooting her.

In the third and last part you just need to be careful to stay away, use the missile and jump when the nucleus open up.

Here's a video showing this strategy:

## Interview with Salsa

#### **meleu**

> Let's start with your background as a (retro)gamer. How when did you start your gamer life? Which console and what were your first favorite games?

#### **Salsa**

I started my gamer life when I was 3 years old. It was in a summer and a travelling amusement park visited my hometown. I spent sunday afternoon there with my family. There was a trailer with arcade games there too. My brothers decided to make a fun of me and put me in front of the most violent game they could find. End it was the first time I ever played a video game. They laughed at me until they got bored, and I just enjoyed myself playing Vendetta. It was love on first sight I could say. Not this specific game, but arcade games and video games in general. I always wanted to have my own arcade cabinet, but never had a good chance or idea around it, and also was afraid that if I will get one, I will want to have another one and so on. From time to time I return to the idea of building my own emulation based machine, using Hyperspin frontend or something similar. I even have crt monitor I could use for that purpose.

I got my first console in the following year on my 4th birthday. Frankly, my parents tried to make me spend less time in the arcades, but that only made it "worse", because I only played more video games. When I started the elementary school I had rather good grades regardless, so my parents wasn't worried about my hobby as much as the fact I spent time in the arcades, where I could easily got bullied. It was one of the reasons why I started training karate. But, oops... I supposed to write about my first console here, sorry. It was a clone of Family Computer (original Japanese model of NES), called Fenix NT-102, very close in appearance. Very sturdy model, I used it a lot back in the days, and I still have it working in very good condition. It's really really hard to bring my favourite games, especially the first ones. I could easily list tens if not even a hundred. I will bring some examples at least: Vendetta, Saint Dragon, Xexex, OutZone, Cadillacs & Dinosaurs, Mystic Warriors, The Guardian Legend, Yume Penguin Monogotari, Samurai Pizza Cats, Duck Tales, Zen: Intergalactic Ninja, Bucky O'Hare.

#### **meleu**

> How and when did you discover the RetroAchievements project? What was your first impression?

#### **Salsa**

I guess that how I discovered RetroAchivements is quite common. I knew that the concept of achievements/trophies exist on modern systems, and I was always more into retro games. That's why, one day, I simply googled a combination of two words: "achievements emulators". RetroAchievements was the first page on the list. It still is. The site looked a bit different than right now, mostly because there was "Global Feed" section showing most of the activity related to achievements in real time from the side of the server. I just loved the idea. I signed up immediately, and downloaded RANes emulator. Just playing the games was quite addictive, but only after a couple of months I started thinking about making my own achievements.

#### **meleu**

> One thing I'm always curious is about the previous skills of the achievement creators. When you started playing with the Memory Inspector, were you familiar with concepts like bit, byte, hexadecimal, little endian, etc.?

#### **Salsa**

Of course I knew about such basics. I learned it in computer science class in high school. Still, I'm not an attentive student, and I barely learn anything if I am instructed... I basically need to learn everything myself, unless I really can't do it myself. I also can use own names for terms that exist but don't sound clear, especially in specific environment. In case of little endian, on RA I used my own term of "reverse-split value"... Sure you can laugh at that if the definition of LE is so well known to you (you are a programmer or other IT person), but I think how it is called is less important here than actual communication.

I learned developing by myself. Didn't used any tutorials or instruction. I simply started doing experiments using the tool-set. Of course my first productions were simple, but it also depends on what game is providing, and what ideas you have in the first place. Regardless it is always the best to play with the game first before starting serious coding. I used to call it "getting close with the game", and that also included doing background research, trying to find as many details about the game as possible.

#### **meleu**

> In a previous issue of RANews I shared [my process of researching a game](https://news.retroachievements.org/issues/2021-06/devtip) to find interesting achievements. I think it's a useful thing not only for actual achievement creators, but for any community member who cares enough about the games they love. They can use such steps to research the game and suggest cool achievements, and then a developer can implement those ideas.
>
> Could you share with us your creative process? How did you do your research? What you used to do to get inspiration?

#### **Salsa**

I'm sorry but I'm not a person who respond to questions like "what is your achievement developing process" in a simple way, so if you want details you will get an essay... I mean it all depends on a lot of things, there is a core pattern though - playing a game, researching RAM, researching the lore, looking for graphics I could use for badges and the icon etc. But it's different for games I know well, and those I don't know at all.

#### **meleu**

> Uhm... Now I'm interested in that essay! Sounds like a nice DevTip article for a future issue of RANews. The key concept of the DevTip segment is to allow achievement creators share their knowledge with a personal touch, without that cold/objective approach we usually see in documentation. So, if you could grace us with your tips with examples of your work, I'm sure many creators would benefit from that.
>
> Another question... When I knew you, you were using Roll-chan avatars. At that time I noticed you were developing some sets for the Roll-chan hacks. What's your connection with the character?

#### **Salsa**

After I joined RA I was switching between different characters I used for my avatars, and I liked changing my avatars quite often. Still I thought it would be the best to use one character per year. Roll-chan happened to be my pick for the year 2017. But yeah, I just adore her, and when I figured out those sprite swaping hacks I thought it will be super cute, and super challenging to tie those with some of more well done, but difficult hacks of Mega Man games. At the same time it was kind of emancipation for the character designed to be a weak support, and potantial damsel in distress. I could say this combination turned her into a real badass, for whom just casual danger is not enough. I could say one of my girls looks exactly like her... so bam! Here you go, some more solid connection *laugh*

#### **meleu**

> Are you involved in any other kind of retrogame related project/scene?

#### **Salsa**

Right now I am not involved in any kind of project like RA, I mean. Some time after I retired from RA I started working on a hardware gaming setup, which would allow convenient way of streaming from my collection of systems. I also extended the collection from 3 systems to much more, and plan to add even more at some point. That emulation machine I mentioned earlier will be part of it too.

There is another invidual project I am working on from some time and it relates to video game music and demo scene music. I am a huge enthusiast of old video game music for quite awhile. I prefer not tell anything more until it will be initiated.

#### **meleu**

> Oh, interesting... You know, there's a russian guy who created some simple and and cool homebrews for NES. His name is Shiru. I've created some sets for two of his games ([Zooming Secretary](https://retroachievements.org/game/4650) and [Alter Ego](https://retroachievements.org/game/8170)), and from time to time I go to [his website](https://shiru.untergrund.net/) to check what he's been up to. And, damn!, I felt delighted by the music he's been creating for ancient hardware, specially [this one](https://youtu.be/JEhGa5avUKM).
>
> Regarding your collection, you once showed that to me. Would you mind to share that with our readers?

#### **Salsa**

Yeah, why not?

#### **meleu**

> Before leaving you did a [long post on the forums](https://retroachievements.org/viewtopic.php?t=1738&c=49369#49369) listing your reasons. Talking as a maintainer of the project, losing the most prolific achievement creator was a big loss. But as your friend, I think that took a big burden off your back.
>
> Looking with a hindsight, do you think it was better for you?

#### **Salsa**

It is more then 2 years since I left. I'm not back there, because I realised I don't fit there, and didn't change my mind. My creativity is a free spirit, and you can't put a leash on it or close it in the cage. And I only felt less free. I still had my fun, and I will remember it well.

#### **meleu**

> You know, this opinion you have is what made me have an idea that we should have a "Custom Set" feature. Where anyone can create an achievement set however they want and share with the community. And then let a group of curators decide which set (or even individual achievements) would be part of the "Official Set" that would award points to the player.
>
> But well, only having ideas is cheap. Implementing them is what takes effort. And the effort required to implement such change would be huge. So probably something for RAWeb-v3. *laugh*

#### **Salsa**

In my opinion the creative environment of RA is still based mostly on reputation of inviduals, which creates too much of unnecessary distraction. But again I could talk about this matter for very long, and it could quickly turn into discusion about politics. Something I would prefer to avoid, because it usually it resembles an endless struggle, where everyone could have something to say, even though it might add nothing, but it would extend the flow.

This idea of "custom set" seems to be out there for quite awhile. Originally it was intended to be implemented in RAWeb v2. .

Personally I think achievement creation process should be completely free and open to anyone from the very beginning. By this I mean not only have access to all the tools, but being able to exhibit own work on the site both elements and complete sets. Allowing to create not only own achievements sets (individually for any game you want regardless if "official" set exist), all kinds of overlays for those sets (like selectable sets of badges, icons, names and descriptions in different languages etc.) but doing it offline, and allowing to set up own leaderboards, and 3rd party online/offline bases, which later could be integreated with offline systems like NES mini, Retron 5 or even next generations of flashcarts (if someone would be willing to work on such support). Retroachievements as non-profit and community based intiative should only become more and more open. Of course like you said it's much easier to have dreams than make them. Still there is also the matter of letting someone to make those dreams if they can do it. That include removing any obstacles that could exist in way that is resonable for both sides.

#### **meleu**

> Yeah, that's surely a goal to be pursued in the long term.
>
> Now let's try to know you better by going into some personal questions, if you don't mind.
>
> What is/are your favorite movie(s) and why?

#### **Salsa**

I could have many really long discussions about it... If I would really need to pick one movie, I mean if the life of my family would depend on it for example, I would pick Back to the Future. Why? It's almost perfect mix of almost every genre - it has comedy, drama, romance, mystery, thriller, scifi and even some horror vibes. The setting is so rich and well done, and all of that with mostly traditional analog FX. The story and it's background is so immersive, and the acting is so interesting, you can return to this movie multiple times and never get bored with it. I also just love the concept of time and dimensional travel. Very much into slice of life and movies with historical/non contemporary settings and costumes. I never met a perso who could say that they don't like this movie (some can tell it's overrate but still not bad), so I don't think I can get wrong with this one really.

#### **meleu**

> What is your favorite kind of music? Can you suggest something?

#### **Salsa**

You know very well I have wide taste in music, and it changes whenever I have keen for specific genre, and I just love to browse and explore the music. If I would need to pick one kind again, I already mentioned it - this would be video game music. Is it clever sidestep of an answer? It could be, but I think that is just expressing my test in music very well. But again if I would need to pick just one artist, there is one I wouldn't feel too bad highlighting a bit like this. It's a japanese band called Zabadak, and their music is something between artpop, progressive rock, acoustic celtic folk, and world music in general. It is very subjective thing though, so of course, please check it but don't expect something universal, because it is a very niche thing.

What I could suggest? Maybe something I listened just recently, and it is related to video game music... One album I like a lot and refreshed just recently: aivi & surasshu - "The Black Box". Really touching, cute and fun combination of quality chiptune and smooth/progressive piano jazz. Like all most of great albums it has a story around it, and you can feel it's going on within the music, not a banal story. What's the best, you can get this album in best quality for free on bandcamp.

I can't just stop here yet. I can listen to and suggest music in many genres, and that include italo disco, japanese city pop, zheul, sythwave, melodic death metal, desert rock, progressive mathcore, guajira, morna, shoegazing, dark ambient etc. And I like to suggest as much as getting suggestions.

#### **meleu**

> Yeah, I also have a wide taste for music and I must confess that since I knew you it became even broader. You made me a synthwave addict...
>
> Next question: What is your favorite food and beverage?

#### **Salsa**

Another topic I can talk about forever. I love cooking and I try to be very consious about what I am eating. I'm not vegan, because I just like meat too much, but I don't think veganism and vegetarianism are stupid. My favourite dishes are pizza (I only eat it once or twice a month) and rosół (polish broth-like soup made almost always from some kind of poultry, served with egg noodles). I love apples, I eat at least 2 per day. My bevarage of choice is tea (most often jasmine green, genmaicha and green rooibos), although from sometime I drink yerba mate, and it become my "pick me up" sort of thing. I drink alcohol occasionaly, but not too much. I prefer craft beer, cider, mead and long drinks. Would love to try all kinds of authentic foods from arround the world.

#### **meleu**

> What is one thing you haven’t accomplished in life you are still aiming for?

#### **Salsa**

It's not just one thing so I will tell about a couple.

I would like to live in home I took part of builiding myself. A home situated more close to nature, but still not too far from civilization. I have a savings account for that purpose, but also support I can count for. I would like to focus on being as much independent as possible (own sources of food, water, power and fuel).

There was one point in my life I wanted to move and live in Japan. Right now I think it wouldn't be possible, but I still would like to visit for long enough to at least have a proper taste of it. I bet that would require at least a couple of months of stay and a lot of money to spend.

#### **meleu**

> Thanks for your time and for sharing a little about yourself with us. Finally, would you like to leave a message for our readers?

#### **Salsa**

Of course. RA is still up, and the fact the community is growing bigger, and people are having fun there only prooves it's done right for what it is. The future shape of it will be determined by active members who are currently investing their time to support it. When I was part of the developer team I never felt like a fish in the water. That doesn't mean I didn't liked doing achievements, or it was just voluntary labour I was doing because I loved the idea. What I mostly mean is that I always thought something should change, and because of that I was able to influence the trends, common sense and standards in general. I still love this idea myself, but I had my fun there already and it was enough for me. Now it's your turn, dear reader. If you love the idea, would like to add something from yourself, and especially when you think something should be changed there. Everything is in your hands now.

Check out what the most wanted games on RetroAchievements are.

## How to Request

Just enter in the game's page and click on "Request Set". You don't have an unlimited amount of requests, though.

You start with none, then you get one when you reach 2.5k points, then you get a new one each 5k points (until 20k). Then you get a new one each 10k points (until a maximum of 20 requests, which happens at 180k points). Then you have a new one each 20k points indefinitely.

You also get the right to make one more request for each year you are a member of RetroAchievements.org.

We often look to the leaderboard to see who has the most points, and those gamers work very hard to be the best. Some live, eat, and breathe fire for achievements and their quest for MORE POINTS. I wanted to take a look at a different approach to the best gamers on this site. Some of our best gamers are mastery chasers, and some even stay on one particular system.

So, here's the current list of Top Mastery and your champions, give it up to these users they worked their butts off to prove that points are one side of this story, Masteries are the other side.
