EDITED: It was user error. I would delete this question, but I cannot see a way of doing that.
Just now I downloaded the Conky source-code, built Conky, and installed it (all on Linux). I used a script of mine to do most of that. The script fetches the release labelled 'latest'.
Yet, Conky reports - via its ability to display its own version, and via
conky --version
, version '1.12.2 compiled 2022-02-23'.The 'latest release' was a few hours ago and is version 1.18.2. (Note the '18'.)
So, I uninstalled Conky, used git manually to get the very latest version of the software, and rebuilt Conky and installed it. Same result.
Can anyone shed light? Thanks.
EDIT: silly me; I forgot the
make install
