Lesson co-development using reverse design: a worked example

Session details

  • Session type: skill-up

  • Keywords: Curriculum Development, Backward Design, Faded example, Collaborative Development, Meta

  • Permission to record this session: Yes

Abstract

In this session, we demonstrate how the constraints of reverse design reduce the uncertainty of a blank page titled "Lesson 1". Nowhere does the Carpentries demonstrate the full cycle of instructional design. We propose this workshop - co-developed by two experienced instructors - using this approach. The process of the development of this workshop is documented and shared as the content of the workshop. Attendees will see how learner personas, faded examples, concept maps, formative and summative assessment create requirements for lesson design.

We provide a worked example of the reverse design process without any assumptions of prior computational knowledge. After the workshop, attendees can combine their experience of the lesson we developed with the process of development, which we share with them, to apply this framework to their own training work.

Personal details

  • Name or pseudoname of the session lead: Darya Vanichkina & Brian Ballsun-Stanton

  • Co-leads' names (we recommend involving 2 helpers/co-leads): as above

  • Email or other ways to contact the session leads/co-leads: [email protected]; [email protected]

  • Country of residence and/or compatible Time Zones (provide options): Australia

  • Would you like to present this multiple times, in other time zones: no (can only do once, sorry! - but we're happy/keen to have it recorded to share with people who can't make it)

  • Would you like to volunteer to be listed as a wrangler/host for your time zone: No

Is there any help you would like to invite from the community? Please provide below in bullet points.

  • not at this time

Other comment:

Hell is: realising that we have to be perfect with our commit messages because we're performing git project management as part of the lesson. I suggest that @dvanic and I are crazy.

@Denubis Also, to make it even more transparent: we should only use GitHub to communicate about the process, no meetings (virtual or in-person). What do you think? [Yes, I acknowledge exactly how hard this is going to be 😿 ).

I hate us so much. Yes, of course this is a good idea.

Assuming both proposals are included in the programme, I think it would be great to point people towards this session during the Curriculum Development skill-up (#37), and to make sure that skill-up session happens first.

Hi @dvanic and @Denubis, the organising committee reviewed this session proposal and had this to say:

This skill up session will guide participants for lesson co-development using reverse design with examples, which sounds interesting and very relevant for the community. We recommend that session leads explain what reverse design is (since the abstract starts with the assumption that everyone know what it is), include prerequisite for the course and provide link to their lesson online (as they mention that it already exists).

We are looking forward to your session, and more details i.e. around scheduling will be shared with you in the coming days. Let me know if I can answer any questions or clarify anything for the time being.

@Denubis did you or darya get the email requesting that you fill out your availability?

Schedule is being finalized today and should be out in 1-2 days.

@ChristinaLK I think I was the only one who did, but I've been swamped with work and childcare, so though Brian could do it. I've filled it out today, sorry!
