Can be done today to some degree with browser plugins such as

Firefox https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/epubreader/
consider PWA front end from https://github.com/evanreichard/AnthoLume (and not the backend)

Idea, include/use libs like:

Related Consider adding "Progress sync" kosync / KoReader Sync support .
