workerd has a test mode that can be used with workerd test.

It looks like at the moment Miniflare only supports workerd serve

What we end up doing in tests (hybrid app, preset, ...) is to launch a server and send requests to execute a test case. Supporting the test mode would simplify and speed up those tests.

Would the vitest integration provide similar functionality?

Yes! Very supportive of this and think it is in the direction of answering "what would a truly native to the runtime answer for testing be?"
