On clicking a card, open a model-style display that shows:

  • A much large version of the selected card
  • Buttons for any action that can be taken with the card
  • Left and Right navigation buttons to move between other cards in your hand
  • Cancel to return to full UI

Potentially a nice 'swipe' animation for switching between cards.

Will post a mock-up when I get a spare moment. Will at the least help you decide if this is something you think is worth doing.

If you do spend time on it, key for me in following up is understanding the interaction design, not just the visual layout. How would players interact with the ui during a play through: does it add clicks? does it hide other elements?
