The "GETTING_STARTED" doc is getting long (and longer) in the tooth, and certainly more involved than its name would imply. Probably should split this up and, while we're at it, apply some light markup to it so we can put it on the website or something (I'm sure wordpress has a plugin for direct markdown usage...)

This has basically been addressed by the Wiki and will be fully addressed after the completion of #179
