I've had good and bad experiences on 99designs - it maybe comes down to the reward offered but I've never been able to offer a super generous one so I can't be sure. I've hosted/run 4 contests now, and what I've seen (that is a bit bothersome) is that designers (even years later) submit modifications of the same designs (just changing the letters or color). Or they obviously use already existing designs that you can find with searching. I think you'll definitely get something better than if you hired a single designer, but it's a heck of a lot of work to give (upwards of 200) designers consistent, responsive feedback about the directions they are going in. I'd also advise to not give any feedback in the form of stars, because the designers see that and start to poach one another's designs. The best contest that I ran, I was able to provide consistent feedback, give direction when asked, and also come up with some creative ideas / totally different directions to go in when the submissions were looking a little boring. Anyway, prepare yourself, because it's a lot of work, if I remember correctly it's 4-5 days for the first round, then you narrow down to maybe 6? and then they get another few days to work, and you have 2 weeks to choose a winner. They are also in timezones everywhere, so you'll get messages / designs around the clock. |
I run 2-3 comps and had a good experience - without too much overhead. I
guess it's a hit or miss.

I would be happy to help! The BIDS competition was the first one I lead/hosted. I found that the more information you provide when adding context to the competition will help guide the initial designs (and responding to those initial ones can really help get close to your vision!) I found that there were a few that got close, but it took a few iterations (with feedback) to get really close to the vision and ultimately the winning design! It can be overhead to interact with the designers, I found that if there is roughly a clear vision, that can help guide the designers to submit good designs. I think running the designer competition is a stronger option rather than a hired designer. |
Thank you very much @vsoch, @chrisgorgo and @franklin-feingold ! So my plan will be to come up with a good context for the competition, and get ready to allocate some time to run it. I will let you know when I ripen up. I think right after sfn, so end of the Oct. Cheers! |
I have got blessing for financing logo design on 99designs.com . Myself I would be a bad judge, and never dealt with that website myself. I wondered, @franklin-feingold , as you had lead BIDS logo design "tender":
Dear @chrisgorgo @satra @mih -- any feedback/recommendations would be welcome! When the "tender" is issued I will announce to wider audience (e.g. BIDS community) for more input/opinion.
