I am on macOS, arm series chip, and I downloaded the extension on vscode and java version "1.8.0_391." But when I open VScode with my cql file, I get this error message:

Starting client failed
Launching server using command /undefined/bin/java failed.
and there is a wheel that doesn't stop turning on the bottom right next to the word "CQL"

I would appreciate any help you can provide.

Hey, I was having the same trouble. It seemed like the latest release wasnt checing to see if you had java installed. Simple fix. Just install the earliest version of the CQL exntesion which will prompt you to install the proper Java/JDK then restart your computer and update your CQL extension to the latest and it should work.
