What is the status of the project?
To my knowledge the key to coin address differentiation is the address prefix at creation and all other wire protocols are the same. Theoretically only the address needs to be changed to create a lib for another coin.
Is that in fact the case or is there more that needs to be understood to complete the lib for another coin?

The status of the project is that it's alive and well. We're nearing the point of another release (you can see activity in a lot of the other modules).
Regarding support for other coins, in some cases, it's just a matter of creating a new address module. Since some altcoins use a PoW (proof of work) or PoS (proof of stake) system, they may require other changes. Even some change quite a bit and introduce additional scripting opcodes (Ethereum).
