Sphinx 1.5.3 is fine, anything more recent breaks.

If I remove my json:object:: section, it works again.

Can confirm. Exact same issue with exact same error. Downgrading sphinx to 1.5.3 fixed the problem for me.

Does anyone perhaps know of an alternative library for Sphinx>=2?
