If we were real geniuses, we'd use face detection to try to guess where to crop the image so that when someone is presented with the crop interface, they should just be able to confirm more times than not.

Is there any "standard" linux lib that does that? :/

Marvin i think opencv might be the best library for face detection.
AFAIK there was even an experimental branch of shotwell which made use of it.
