<em>To figure out which grad school is right for you, you should visit the
schools! Most astronomy departments will cover your (reasonable)
expenses.</em>
<ul>
<li> <b>First, figure out when you want to come visit us</b>. We
strongly encourage you to come during our scheduled prospective student visit:
<b>March 5—March 8</b>. If this week doesn't work for you,
let us know when you can come, and we will make it happen. <br><br>
Please try to stay for two full weekdays; this will be enough time for
us to introduce you to the faculty and the grad students. We also have activities planned for Saturday to
help you get to know Tucson,
so if you can, we encourage you to stay for those as well. </li>
<li><span class="highlight"><b>Second, if you haven't already
done so, <a
href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?formkey=dGRBM3Y3akVBV3Nhcm9pM1RpUzFKbVE6MA#gid=0">please
fill out this brief survey!</a></b></span> This will help us arrange
for a grad student or faculty member to pick you up from the
airport, and for a grad student host you during your visit. Being hosted
in a grad student home is fun and extremely helpful for getting an
insider's look at the department. However, if you are uncomfortable
with this and would prefer to stay in a hotel, just let us know at
the end of the survey. </li>

<li> 1) When would you like to visit (keep in mind our spring break
dates as listed above)?</li>
<li> 2) Will you be accompanied on your visit? (spouses, significant
others, domestic partners, parents, etc.)</li>
<li> 3) Do you have any allergies or difficulties with dogs or cats?</li>
<li> 4) Are you vegetarian/vegan/etc?</li>
<li> 5) Are you interested in the LBT/SMT day trip?</li>
<li> 6) What other interests do you have outside of astronomy? We'll
try to find you a host who shares some of these interests. </li>
<li> 7) Are there any particular fun things you'd like to do during
your stay (e.g. hiking, visiting telescopes, etc.).</li>
<li> 8) In a few words, what are your chief science interests, if any?</li>
<li> 9) Are there faculty you'd especially like to talk to?</li>
</ul>
-->
<li><b>Third, when you have selected or purchased your plane tickets, please forward your
travel itinerary to <a href="mailto:[email protected]">Treva Dickerson</a></b>.
If you choose to have the department purchase your tickets (domestic visitors), that's all you need to do. If
you buy the tickets yourself, Treva will help you take care of the reimbursement paperwork when you
visit. If your visit is a part of a multi-leg tour, we can reimburse
you for a part of the trip. Also email <a
href="mailto:[email protected]">Evan Schneider</a> with travel
details so we can arrange for hosts, etc. </li>
<li> <b>Fourth, check out <a
href="http://www.as.arizona.edu/people/faculty/faculty_home.html">the
list of faculty and their research interests.</a></b> We also
recommend that you click the "publications" link to check out recent work
by faculty members you are interested in meeting. Keep thinking about who you'd really like to meet
and what research topics you would like to pursue. Feel free to give
your grad student host an update prior to your visit,
and we'll try to add those professors (and others with related
interests) to your schedule.</li>

<ul>
<li><b>Where will I stay during my visit? </b><br> We will arrange
a grad student to host you based on your interests and lifestyle. This
person will provide for your room, board, and transportation needs.</li>
<li><b>Tell me about the department visit...</b><br> You will also be
assigned a "faculty host", who will arrange your schedule. You'll have
half-hour meetings with faculty members, especially those with similar
research interests to yours, and those you ask to meet. This shouldn't
be stressful! It's a chance for you to meet potential research advisors
and learn about current research at Steward. Ask, ask, ask! <br><br>
Many of us at Steward gather for <a
href="http://arizona.voxcharta.org/">Morning Coffee</a> Mondays,
Wednesdays, and Fridays at 10:30am. Topics of discussion range from the
mundane to the daily astro-ph crop. You will obviously be welcome to
show up and chat with grad students, post-docs, and faculty, or if you
like you can just listen in. At the more formal level, there is never
a shortage of cutting-edge lectures, lunch talks, or research group
meetings to attend if you like. <br><br> If you attend during
the official visit week, you will be treated to a dinner at Steward director
Buell Januzzi's house on Thursday evening, where
you will get to mingle with faculty, as well as a party / BBQ with the grad students
on Friday evening. If you come at another time, there will likely be smaller dinners or
get-togethers that your host will arrange. (Note
that the department reimburses our expenses, so you needn't worry about
that!)</li>
<li><b>The Fun Stuff</b><br> Besides meeting the faculty and grad
students, you will get a tour of the <a href="http://mirrorlab.as.arizona.edu">
Steward Observatory Mirror Lab</a>, where we cast some of
the world's biggest telescope mirrors. We are also planning
other activities, such as a tour of the MMT or a hike up to Seven Falls near Tucson.<br><br>
You are welcome to join us in going out to clubs / bars in the evening, or
checking out some live music. If you are an active sort, we can probably take you
rock climbing with grads and post-docs. If you'd like to get a better idea of the culture
Tucson has to offer, you can spend your Saturday visiting the Desert Musuem and exploring
the downtown / 4th Avenue District. There are lots of possibilities; just let us know what
your interests are! </li>

<li><b>How's the weather in Tucson?</b><br> Spring in Tucson is
wonderful! We should have pleasant, dry weather for your
visit—highs around 70°F and lows around 40°F. Bring
a light jacket for dinners outside and a fleece if you intend to go on the telescope visit.
Below is climate information for Tucson and nearby Mount Lemmon by
month, taken from Wikipedia.
<br /><br /> Yes, it's hot in the summer. Note though that residents of
Tucson often escape the summer heat by heading up to nearby (~hour drive
to the very top) <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Lemmon">
Mount Lemmon</a>, which, at 9157 ft, boasts summer highs in the 70s
(°F) and snow in the winters (see sledding photo, above).

<em>You will be mailed an elaborate guide to the Graduate Academic Program, which can also be found <a
href="https://www.as.arizona.edu/graduate-program-guide-and-requirements">here</a>
- please take a careful look at it as it contains very important
information! The info below is just a brief summary. The Graduate
Program Advisor is <a
href="https://www.as.arizona.edu/course-requirements">Ann
Zabludoff</a> (<a
href="mailto:[email protected]">mail</a>); you will likely
meet her during your visit.</em>
<ul>
<li><b>Funding</b><br> As a Steward graduated student, you are supported
as either Research Assistant (RA) or Teaching Assistant (TA) until you complete
your degree. You are also given a $2,500 stipend to spend at your own
discretion on research related items such as books, a laptop, conference
expenses, etc. <br><br>
We are not required to hold a TA during our first year, which is to say we do
not teach during our first year. Most of us don't TA during the
second year either - Steward graduate students typically take TAs after we are done with most of
our classes. Note that we are required to do two semesters of TAing as part of the
PhD program.</li>
<li><b>Classes</b><br> As a student at Steward, you are required to
complete successfully our 5 "core" courses in astronomy: ISM & Star
Formation, Stars & Accretion, Cosmology, Galaxies, and Instrumentation
& Statistics. In addition, students are required to take another eight
graded credits of non-core courses. Core courses are taken during the
first two fall semesters. You can fulfill the non-core requirement by
choosing from a wide range of 3 credit elective and 1-2 credit seminars
that are typically offered in the spring semesters and coordinated with
the core courses offered the previous semester. The non-core requirement
can also be satisfied by taking courses offered by other departments,
including Physics, Lunar and Planetary Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Electrical
Engineering, and Optical Sciences. You can find more details and
a sample study plan <a
href="http://www.as.arizona.edu/academic_program/graduate_program/graduate_academic_guide.html">here</a>.
<!--<br><br> <em>Be advised that the structure of the course
cirriculum has changed, so when talking to current grad students on your
visit, keep in mind that your actual mileage may vary. Ann Zabludoff and
Chris Impey can definitely answer any questions you have about the new
specifics and the transition.</em>--> </li>
<li><b>Advising and Mentoring</b><br>
In the past, graduate students at Steward were encouraged to choose an advisor
during the summer before we arrived in August. This year, however,
we will be holding an Internal Research Symposium shortly after new grads arrive in the fall.
At this symposium, various professors in the department will give short talks about their research,
to help you find the best research match for you. Within a month or so of arriving, you will be expected
to select an advisor, so that you can get started on research as early in your graduate career as possible.
<br><br> Of course, while you are visiting you will be provided an excellent opportunity to meet
with potential research advisors. If you end up talking to someone you'd really like to work with,
don't hesitate to send a followup email or call. That way, you can get established with an advisor before you
arrive, and will be ready to hit the ground running as soon as you get here in the fall. Also, please
don't hesitate to ask current grad students for a candid opinion of various faculty members before choosing!
<br><br> During recent years
students have been required to enlist a Mentoring Committee of 4-5
faculty members. The function of the Mentoring committee is to meet
roughly once a semester to track your progress and help you identify
and deal with problems. Eventually, your mentoring committee will evolve
into your prelim / dissertation committee.</li>
<li><b>The Prelim</b><br> The preliminary exam consists of two tests, one written
and one oral. The written portion has both an open- and closed-book
section and is given simultaneously to all second-year students during
their 4th semester. Ask some current graduate students about this
experience—some will have recently finished taking their exam.
After this, you are required to take the oral exam at the start
of your 5th semester (i.e., end of Fall of the 3rd year). During the oral exam
students give a presentation of their research to their chosen prelim committee, which is
followed by a Q&A session.</li>
<li><b>Dissertation</b><br> Once you pass the prelim you are on your
way to the dissertation. Some people change advisors and projects,
some don't. The policy in recent years has been that the PhD should
take you about 5 years, though some people take longer. Please ask the
grads about their experience!</li>
