The README is not self-sufficient, as following its instructions won't allow to run a local instance of FFM out of the box.

Missings are:

  • A basic procedure to setup an MPD client (or a mention that one is required)
  • Explanations to configure config.js

It's not the case. You will need a running instance of mpd-wsgi and (obviously) a working MPD server.

config.js seems pretty self-explanatory to me. What don't you understand ?

It would be easier if you tell me what you have done so far.

Maybe you skipped this line from the README.

As this project is only the frontend, you will need a running instance of mpd-wsgi and a MPD server if you want to display some data.

we should add a direct link to the backend project or provide a submodule to it.

or maybe a vagrant box with everything in it, including some nice mp3s ?

There is a direct link. And the mpd-wsgi project has a Vagrantfile and some shell scripts to initialize the project.
Maybe we could create another Vagrantfile grouping the two projects. It seems a bit overkill to me as you can just modify the config.js to point to the mpd-wsgi server running at mpd.fixme.ch:8000.
