My name is George. My interests are in structured open data (esp. within open repository contexts), resource discovery, distributed digital libraries & repositories, and human-computer interaction (HCI).
I am based within Information Services at the University of Glasgow as Assistant Director - Digital Libraries. I work and lead on repository and digital library things, while also supporting activities within Open Research, research discovery, and digital scholarship. My background is both as an academic and as a practitioner. I have a PhD in Computer & Information Sciences from the iSchool at the University of Strathclyde, specializing in topics surrounding resource discovery in heterogeneous digital environments. I also happen to be an avid Wikipedian and an advocate of the knowledge commons.
I am a chartered member (MCLIP) of the Chartered Institute of Library & Information Professionals (CILIP) and a registered Fellow (FHEA) of UK Advance HE (formerly the UK Higher Education Academy).
Prior to working at the University of Glasgow I did the following things:
- Open Repository Manager & Technologist (Scholarly Publications & Research Data), University of Strathclyde
- Project Evaluator & Business Analyst, Jisc funded Principles in Patterns (PiP) project
- Senior Lecturer in Information Management & Systems at Liverpool John Moores University -- lecturing in information retrieval, structured data, resource discovery, and information architecture; research in distributed digital repositories and Semantic Web technologies
- Research Fellow, Centre for Digital Library Research in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, University of Strathclyde
- Research Assistant, Centre for Digital Library Research in the Department of Computer and Information Sciences, University of Strathclyde
