Possible to use custom sorters with html 'from' data?

Not sure if this is the right place to open this question/issue, but I'm looking to use the from option of html, i.e. a html table exists on my page, and I then call the jQuery grid.js wrapper to convert it to a proper grid.js table.

I've been trying to get some custom sorting working with different data types, i.e. date objects in a table, but can't seem to get it to work, my custom sort function are never called, am I doing something wrong?
