This is less a bug than a bad consequence of a (bad) design decision: The "virtual" documents in a collection are all empty as they are are "hooked-in" charters references through the @source attribute in cei:text. A full text search in collection containing this kind of charters could probably only work, if we trigger in the Exist/Lucene backend that a copy would be stored for all hooked-in charters under the id of the current collection when they are changed. We could remedy this maybe only with a warning to the "search in sub collection" field, e.g. "Attention, this collection contains charters that are maintained in other collections. The search will exclude all these charters."
The search looks inside the currently selected collection, but the charters in those collections are empty placeholders, so no result is returned.
