Default examples don't render (latin) text

Is this issue related to iced?

• My hardware is compatible and my graphics drivers are up-to-date.

What happened?

In all applications based on iced master branch, text does not render at all on my system (PopOS 22.04 with Intel graphics).

It used to render fine previously, i have not tried to find the offending commit. There are many issues here describing similar problems, but:

• this does not only affect CJK as described in The button cannot display Chinese #2468 It is hoped that it can normally use non-English languages such as Chinese #2542 Unicode characters not showing up on the Text Input step in the tour #2325
• it actually displays empty squares instead of invisible chars as described in Tour and other examples doesn't render most text #2563, and installing noto fonts does not change anything

Adding shaping(text::Shaping::Advanced) makes the text render properly. So i'm not sure if it means the default font lookup makes a bad guess, or?

What is the expected behavior?

Text should render in examples and other applications.

Has anyone had an opportunity to look at this? I am running in to a similar, but different issue. In my case, I do not see rectangles -- I see no text at all. For example, here is what I see when I try to run the tour example (commit 34314b3f576fdfffdd82968a685020d4dca47992):
