This is a collection issue for various things encountered during other work.

We may want to set check_untyped_defs for mypy as it's currently skipping some of the code. This finds 351 errors (though many duplicates) so will take some fixing time.
Switch to ruff?
Finally adopt black for formatting?
Poetry?
