Idea: fan output -> arduino nano -> servo to control pen

I'm working on prototyping some smaller plotters and am trying to get the fan output on the E4 board to talk to an arduino nano to use a simple servo to lift and drop a pen. Would this be a worthwhile alternative to the stepper or solenoid approach?
