While degrading from "nice segments" to more and more crazy ones, the MM starts to look really bad. It would be nice to investigate, whether this causes a problem.
Nevertheless, it seems that the correct approach is to use standard MM to get an "entry solution" (something that is close) and then create more even segments (e.g., using range_limit of Flood Fill).
