Survey Mitigation

Data location

some of them might be on github repo (NEFSC spatial), but they may not be the most up to date. Dana got them from people in her group. Dana will send new shapefile for Ocean Quahog that doesn't have rough edges. She will send the updated Scallop shapefile.

What is the type of data?

Shapefile

If Other, please specify data type

5 separate files (shrimp, clam, quahog, scallop, shellfish (historical))

Metadata

Program description: see InPort Atlantic Surfclam and Ocean Quahog Survey | InPort, Sea Scallop Survey | InPort, Northern Shrimp Surveys | InPort
Frequency of update: Clam strata got adjusted a little to remove untowable bottom around 2018 or 2019. The scallop strata recently got adjusted. However, generally strata aren’t updated year to year.
Where is metadata currently stored?
InPort

Any data attributes that are non-spatial (e.g., stratum id)?

Yes

If Yes, please explain

-there are some, Dana does not have a README file. The data attributes are generally strata ID, depth, area. Some data attributes are unclear.

General description of project purpose and summary

-until recently there were strata for all shellfish, in 2018 they remade them to be separate strata (clam, quahog, scallop). This year the scallop survey was redone, Dana will send new file. Surf clam and quahogs are sampled together. See InPort for background information for each program.

Wind developer activity information

-Exact cable locations would be helpful to know, especially since shellfish surveys require dredging and could damage cables. Location of construction activity and structures in a given season would be helpful to know for survey planning.

Notes from Josh:

  • 2018 re-stratified quahog / clam strata
  • 2024 redesign of the the scallop survey strata to align with SAMS (panel review)
  • Using GRTS instead of stratified random sampling now
  • Display quahog / clam strata together (two peas in one pod)
  • NEFSCspatial GitHub repo has some survey strata data
  • Clam survey strata get adjusted annually to remove untowable bottom (but otherwise rarely updated)
  • Caused issue with analyses (so many holes), but Dana has a smoothed version
  • Ideally only want 1 polygon per stratum
  • Useful info from developers for survey planning:
  • Cable locations, surveying for cables (big one)
  • Where they'll be doing construction in a given season in the immediate future
  • If a station falls in a WEA we’ll check it out, if we can sample within 1 to 3 miles then that’s fine; otherwise choose an alternate station

@NMucci1 For the Atlantic Surfclam and Ocean Quahog Survey, remove the following from the Description "Station data includes: shipboard sensors, including ship speed and position, dredge angle, voltage and amperage of electrical current that powers the pump on the dredge (through 2011), manifold pressure, water depth and temperature. Biological data includes: catch weight, catch number, lengths, weights, and meat weights." We're not serving this data on the Data Hub, so it doesn't make much sense to have this text in the Description (it's a bit confusing).

@NMucci1 For the Sea Scallop Survey, the Description needs edited. It states "The survey aims to determine the distribution and abundance of scallops and associated fauna utilizing two sampling devices: the 8-foot wide New Bedford style dredge, standardized sea scallop dredge and the stereo-optic towed camera array (HabCam)." It says two sampling devices, but lists 3?
