Forceful deploy cause long upload times

I'm helping make a blog and it has a lot of articles and images. My understanding is that using middleman deploy is equal to building and then a forceful git push, which causes everything in the repo to be re-written. Whatever the cause, updating the site to the git repo it is published on can take a few minutes for a very small incremental change.
