There are a few minor issues with the messaging system and email notifications.

  • There is no way to add extra space in the title of the message between 2 fields.
  • Some characters are escaped unless the message field are displayed as plain text.
  • HTML email is not supported.

There is a known issue with HTML entities in the subject of a message. There is an issue on Message Notify https://www.drupal.org/node/2386273 and could also explain the problems with spaces being removed. There is a patch but there is no release with the patch included.
