we can add, edit notes, view it in the panel as well as in the file, making reports....
Everything seems to work well but since you close the windows, everything is lost.
We keep nothing.

This feature only works with workspaces. This means that you need to have a folder opened in the VSCode. Can you confirm that's the case?
Swissknife should create a file in .vscode/swissknifeNotes.json with all the notes taken. Can you confirm if the file is there? And that when you reopen the window you still open the same workspace? (the same folder)
